I have always wanted to help an old woman cross the street.
It is such a good thing to do,
in the truest sense of the word good.  Tonight I saw an old woman
crossing the street.
It looked like she needed help.
Old and frail she wobbled across 7th ave
Clutching her pocketbook close.
My instinct was to help but in a case of disillusionment I realized
I didn't know how to help.
Do I grab her arm ?
Or would that startle her?
Do I offer to hold her pocketbook?
Or would I come off as some sort of amateur thief?
So I walked past her
Not helping at all
Instead just wondering how, logistically
One would help an old woman to cross the street.

3rd week on the job

SO...

I put bandaids on my heels this morning
because of new flats I purchased from Jcrew
Sea Green.

My previous wear with these flats (the first wear)
caused blisters, bubbly and rough.

today was my second wear
i often sit in my desk chair with one leg curled under me, makes me propped up.
my one foot is under my butt.

i get up from my chair for a meeting
walk to the meeting room
sit down and have the meeting
after the meeting a girl says to me
oh you have something i think, stuck to you, it looks like a bandaid
there was a bandaid hanging
from my butt

third week on the job.

a kind of sad story about this woman from my building

There was this drug addicted older woman who lived in my building on 15th street.
She must have been in her 50s.  Possibly older, or possibly a little younger.  Her face was always quite puffy so it was hard to tell, or even ballpark an exact age. (Drug addicts faces get puffy?) Unsure of the origin of the puffiness, though I am guessing frequent drug use was the cause.
Actually, she didn't live in my building.  She didn't belong in my building.  She dated this man in our building.  He was older too. And had this big really cute dog.  I should say, the dog had the potential to be cute, but always looked dirty.  Poor dog was likely neglected.
I had several encounters with this woman.  I never came to know her name.  I did however, come to know that she was a little...off.  Unstable.  The number of times I was in the elevator with her, she was always babbling about nothing (well sometimes it was about the state of the dog... "that dog, I want to take it out for a walk, he won't let me ...babble babble.")  And other such mutterings.  Always dressed in a tattered ripped shirt.  Sometimes showcasing a smudge of blue eye makeup on her eyes.  Blond hair messy.  Eyes glazed over and - squinty.  Often she would be carrying that dog in her laundry basket, or on a leash.  I would nod and smile nervously, walking quickly out of the elevator when my floor came up.
She lived on floor 6.  No - he lived on floor 6.  She would frequent his apartment often.  I later found out they were in a relationship; boyfriend and girlfriend.
Given my tendency towards apprehension, I became scared of this woman.  She was clearly an unwieldy and unpredictable drug addict/possible homeless woman.  Known to walk down our block muttering her mutterings.  Loudly.
One night I saw her in our vestibule and I gasped before opening the front door.  She was lying in the vestibule, spread out, holding crutches.  She yelled to me, lemme in, lemme in.  (She didn't have a key to the door, and I don't live in a doorman building.)  Lemme in, Lemme in, she shouted.  Oh no.  This was a dilemma.  I was scared of this woman.  I couldn't let her in.  So I didn't.  I kind of walked around her and let myself in.  I left her lying there.  Pretty inhumane.  I immediately knocked on my Supers door, and when he came out, I pointed to the pile of crutches and homeless woman in the vestibule.
"I'll take care of it." he said.  This was clearly something that happened fairly regularly, given his lack of surprise to see the sight in the vestibule.  He rolled his eyes and went back into his apartment.
I'm left to assume an ambulance was called and the police were notified.
"She was probably brought to Bellevue" said a fellow resident I was talking to in the elevator a few days later, recounting my experience to him.
"Sad." I said.
"Sad." He agreed.
Days and weeks went by.  It was night again, and I was walking home from the subway station.  I get to my block.  I see her.  She's acting slightly 'off'.'  Limping, talking to herself.  I think she sees me, she is a few steps ahead of me, and she turns around.  Oh no, she saw me.  She remembers the time I didn't let her into the building.  She may harm me.  Possibly attack me.  (Again, I am prone to sometimes irrational apprehension.)  However the thought wasn't too far off.  A drug addict has the capability for violence.
I run to outpace her and make it into the building before she can yell at me, or do worse, to let her in.  I make it inside my building, and in the elevator, before she does.  I am out of breath and my heart is beating so fast.  I call my Mom after dead-bolting the door to my apartment.
"Why is someone like that living in your building?"
"She doesn't live here - I don't know."
"Be Safe."
"Yep."
A few more weeks go by, and a few more incidents occur.  I see ambulances outside one day.  I ask what happened to a fellow resident I recognize standing nearby.
"It's the woman..."
"Oh."  We both shake our heads in understanding.
One time my boyfriend calls the ambulance because she is lying in the vestibule again when we want to go outside.  The ambulance comes, the police come.
A month or two passes and I am struck by a note in the elevator:
"Hello All-
I wanted to let you know that my girlfriend just passed away. She passed away on Saturday morning.  She will be missed.
Frank, 6D"
I knew immediately who Frank was referring to. I was struck with sadness.  I felt sad for Frank.  I felt sad for the drug addicted woman.  The note was empty, no one had written any messages of sympathy thus far.  I took out a pen from my bag and wrote : "Frank I am so sorry for your loss.  My deepest and sincerest condolences."  I did not sign my name.
I came home that night and the note was covered with messages.  I was glad I wrote the first message.  I was glad people followed.  It felt human.
Yesterday I saw the dog.  He looked sad and dirty as usual.  There was someone new walking him.  I looked at the man attached to the dog, and he spoke to me with wide, glazed over eyes, and nervous glances.  His face was puffy.

4/27/2011

It's all about the small things right? So i've decided to list 3 arbitrary, small, trivial things that i think are good. that i think are actually great.
1. grapefruit , sliced in half, with 1 (one) sugar packet sprinkled on each half.
2. my new white blazer
3. the moon in any form!

I encourage every to think of 3 arbitrary good things they like. NOW to the subject matter at hand..American Idol Tonight.

OMG JLo's hair. NOTHING is more flawless. So tonight's theme is songs written by Carole King. Since it is not nearly contemporary enough for me, I expect that this night will be mediocre and fairly boring. Time will tell.

Jacob Lusks suit- bad. Real bad. Oo I got excited because I thought that was him playing piano. Turns out it's another dude. All I have to say is Jacob Lusk has gots to Go. Not even remotely interested in hearing him sing, and I think the majority of America agrees.

Next up is Lauren Alaina. I actually like her dress and I think it looks good on her. As for her singing, not so hot. Just mediocre. I think that has a lot to do with the song. If she sang a better song, it would make all the difference. Those blonde backup singers, boy sitting with her that she's singing to/at, man on small keyboard, man on guitar, are all weird. Oh good Randy agrees the song was boring. Lauren Alaina has grown on me these past couple of weeks, I do think she is a great singer, and a genuine human being, I'm just not into country, therefore i do not think she should be the next American Idol.

Okay so as for the duets, I'm not commenting because I think they're dumb.

3rd singer is Scotty. EW is that a blue leather jacket? Stop it. Awful. His performance is a snoozefest, but at least its not as offensively awful as his typical country "crooning." Okay fine i kinda liked him SINGING THIS SONG ONLY. i do not like him. I liked him singing this song. Moving on.

James Durbin. I'm excited to hear him sing because he's been really good lately. He's singing Will you love me Tomorrow... Oo really good. This is a great song, and he is singing it really really well. Best performance of the night so far, by far. That's something i would actually download and listen to.

Randy has said the word "cheek" one too many times tonight.

The odds of me watching the Lauren Alaina - Scotty duet are slim to not happening. Fast forwarding.

Casey's hat is weird. Fedora's are not okay. Casey is played outttt. I think he's going home this week. This performance is not up to par. The saxophone player is doing a better job than him singing. James Durbin was 345 times better.

Last is Haley. I like Haley. I don't think this is her most amazing performance to date, but it's okay. She brought it home at the end, to finish out the song. I agree with Randy that the beginning was slow.

So that's it for tonight. Casey and Jacob will definitely be bottom two. I hope everyone has a lovelllly night, a-di-os!

4/20/2011

Hi All!

I just finished a delectable meal consisting of 12 pieces of matzah pizza, and I am looking forward to identical suppers for the next 5 nights. Actually I'm lying, tomorrow I plan to mix it up with cold cuts (on matzah) , but all other nights, matzah pizza. Holla!

Okay, back to the subject at hand; I am SO ready for American Idol tonight. Tonight's theme is "hits from the 21st Century" -- i am fully expecting Scotty to sing an awful awful country song, but I'm hoping some of them pick fun ones. It's a good theme; finally songs that are popular and are known by the general public. (save for Scotty, who, as previously stated, will pick an aforementioned awful song.)

Oooo I do not like Jenny Lo's outfit tonight! It's very G and G , very Strawberry. The point I'm making is it looks cheap. Not loving it.

OMG WHY ARE THEY BRINGING NAIMA BACK ON THE STAGE. help help help. so bad. Oh good and here's Paul McDonald, sounding horrible, and wearing the apparent only piece of clothing he owns, his rose suit. Omg Naima is jumping everywhere. She needs to be removed from the stage by security.

Oh Pia, you are so awesome! Sad.

Aright well first up is Scotty, and I have muted his entire performance, thereby making it unable for me to comment on it. When's he going to go awayyyy??

Ooo, the judges didn't like him! They obviously read my blog, woke the H up, and realized that Scotty sucks. Thanks judges for reading my blog! Buh-bye Scotty McCreery aka Alfred E Neuman aka McCreepy aka EWww thats an awful camel colored coat.

2nd on stage is James Durbin singing Muse, Uprising. He is really trying to look like Adam Lambert with the shoulder pads and capri pants. He also appears to be holding some sort of wand. And/or whip, can't decipher. So I did think that he killed the first chorus of the song. In a good way. It was really really well sung. The second chorus was a little to high for me, kinda made my head hurt. But all in all it was a really good performance. He did awesome, and it was a GREAT popular song choice. Good job James!

Did Steven Tyler just compare James to a T-Rex? He makes no sense. That's the first and hopefully last dinosaur reference I'll hear on idol.

Wow yay I'm already excited for Hayley, because she chose Adele's Rolling in the Deep. An awesome song that is so right now. I feel like her dress is wrong for the song though. It's a happy picnic dress, not right. She should've worn a short black dress and her hair crazy curly like it was in the beginning. Anyhow she sounds awesome, and she's great.

Next up is Jacob Lusk. His suit is very metallic, and he looks like the tin man. Very emotional performance by Jacob! Again, I don't love his voice. I've been over him since week deux, and I think he may be out tomorrow.

Next is Casey Abrams singing Maroon 5 which I'm excited about. Ohh i like this song! I think he's singing it well. Okay he's very awkwardly marching over to the crowd and slapping them five. He's more like slapping their hands kinda violently actually. A hahah he just kissed JLo on the cheek...I actually LOL'ed that was an awesome move. Hahahaha. I did think that was a really good performance. Notice how everyone who is doing awesome is singing POPULAR songs. It's just a better choice.

And here's Stefano singing Neo. Oh no he's making weird gyrating moves. What, did he just come from the firehouse? Why the suspenders? Gosh these outfits are awful tonight. I think the background singers are singing more than him. I gotta say this is the worst performance of the night. (Not counting Scottys performance, which i muted, i'm actually pretending he's not even on the show anymore, so i don't even count him.) Anyhow I think Jacob and Stefano are next to go.

Final performance is Lauren Alaina singing a stupid country song. Awful hair, cute hoops! Over the performance. It's just o.k.

Steven Tyler's critiques are absolutely useless. JLo is so pretty, I forgive her for her dress tonight. And on those points, that's it for tonight! James Durbin was definitely the best, Hayley was awesome, and Casey was good too. Boltax out!

4/13/2011

Hi All. After spending a good portion of my week thinking about denouncing my American citizenship due to the fact that our country voted off Pia Toscano over the likes of Scotty McCreery, I've decided to remain American and watch idol tonight to see how things go.

Like seriously, what a joke! oy.

At least J-Lo never fails to look anything less than stellar. Super cute tonight J-Lo, super cute.

1st up is Paul McDonald who I am already not at all excited to see because of his

a) dumb outfit he wears literally EVERY week and
b) his stupid bio we just saw talking about how he wants every song to be an "encore" song for his "show." what "show?" What are you saying Paul.

Why am I watching Paul McDonald flail around the stage when i could be watching Pia T doing her thing and actually having a great voice and singing well. Why America, Why?

Question: are the judges being paid to only compliment everyone? It's actually painful. Wow his teeth are white. He's definitely got that goin for him. But that's about it.

Next up is Lauren ALAINA singing Miley frickin Cyrus. I don't know who is more fundamentally annoying: Lauren Alaina or Miley Cyrus. Lauren Alaina singing Miley is almost too much for me to handle. What's worse is Lauren's poofy tutu thing and those cowboy boots.

K she's not really killing this song. I do acknowledge she has a good voice, but I didn't love this. She can do better. You cannot even compare her abilities to Pia, and no i do NOT think she will be taking Pia's votes. Oh, surprise of the century, the judges have no constructive criticism for Lauren. AND Steven Tyler is making no sense.

Wow her dress is awful.

Third up is Stefano. I do like Stefano. I think he's doing a good job this week. It's not epic but it's good! Probably one of his own best performances on idol. Do I think he's going to be America's next superstar singing sensation? No. Is he better than the first two we heard? Yes, for sure. Oh Randy agrees with me about this being his best song. And next is Steven Tyler, once again making Zero sense. Aw Stefano, I'm proud of him. He's a qt.

On another positive note, i'm SO glad I never have to hear Naima again. How awful was she??

Okay great, here's Scotty singing a country song that I've never heard of in my life. Did Scotty really just say he's "going back to his country roots?" When has he EVER EVER strayed from his country roots? The only songs he sings are country, and they are all awful. He is so, so, bad.

Seriously, if the judges think he's good, and they don't critique him, I'm officially moving to Canada because i no longer want to live in a country that supports this awful singer.

Well it looks like I'm moving to Canada. Seriously, I'm taking the first plane out of JFK. Can't deal. Scotty is AWFUL! I hope the bagels are good in Canada. (Bagels are an intrinsic and important part of my diet.)

Casey A is next singing Natureboy? What is that? Is that a song? K so the beginning of the song kinda sucked, I'm a little bit over his whole shtick. The end is picking up, he's cool, he's different, I'm just to be honest, kinda over him. Cool song though. The beginning was so slow it kind of ruined it for me. The end picked up though, for sure.

Wow okay so after some further research on my own during the commercial break, I realized that Nature Boy is actually a really really cool song by Nat King Cole. I just listened to the original, and its pretty bad ass. Casey is now a little bit cooler for choosing that song.

Next up is Haley bop singing Blondie's Call Me. I think she'll do really well and i'm looking forward to hearing her! She's my fave thus far. Ohhh i like her boots! I'm into boots. So there are parts of her performance that are awesome, and others that are just okay. I don't think this is her best performance.

I love how the one time the judges give someone a criticism, they give it to the best people who do NOT deserve the criticism. Haley is the last person that should be criticized. I mean really, nothing bad to say about frickin Scotty and then you tell Haley to choose another song?? Come on. Seriously now.

Haley is my favorite.

Why do Jacob Lusk's suits never seem to fit properly? Very ill-fitted suits every week. But that's neither here nor there. I've been over J-Lusk since episode 2. He has a good voice, he's not going to be the next American Idol, and I think he is going to be eliminated tomorrow.

Tyler Perry is actually speaking gibberish right now to Jacob Lusk. Not making any sense.

Last guy tonight is James Durbin singing with a sketchy looking dude who has luxurious blonde locks. James appears to be doing some sort of a back handstand while this guy plays guitar for like 5 minutes straight. James really isn't singing much, but okay fun performance. The only words he's singing are "call it heavy metal." How long did it take him to memorize those tricky lyrics??? No I don't know, he's a fun performer. He's good, I could see him in the Top 3.

Well, looks like that's all for tonight. My new top 3 are Haley, James, and Stefano. I'd also like to report that I will be muting all future performance of Scotty McCreepster, so I will no longer be commenting on his singing.

Xoxo,
Sam.
